Ode to Summer!

I love summer.
I love the first sunburned day…
…the opening of the snow-cone stand…
…the asphalt that makes our bare feet dance…
…the Popsicles that melt so fast that they fall off the stick, and we
catch them in our hands rather than waste the last refreshing bite.

I love the noise…
…the kids at home using Daddy as a monkey bar…
…the boom boxes that blare tinny music of infinite variety…
…the outboard motors that come to life after a long winter’s nap…
…the screen porch doors that bang relentlessly at the numerous comings
and goings…

I love the heat…
…the fourth t-shirt change of the day…
…the second or third bathing suit…
…the sweat that drips while I run, soaks my hair, my back, my shorts…
…the way in which the humidity envelops me in a matter of seconds in a
soupy sheen…

I love the breeze…
…warm, without any trace of a bite, refreshing…
…moving the palm trees to and fro…
…helping the flowers wag their petals…
….holding the pelicans suspended high in the air like ancient
pterodactyls…

I love the food…
…heirloom tomatoes and sliver queen corn…
…huge wedges of watermelon…
…barbeques galore…
…fresh iced tea…

I love outdoor events…
…gatherings in the park…
…the first day fishing…
…picnics and lemonade on the beach…
…strolls down the boardwalk…

I love roller blading…
…boogie-boarding…
…water-skiing…
…building sand castles…
…chasing fire flies…

I love the brightness of the sun…
…the smell after torrential rain…
…the sounds of the bees…
…the extra effort made by friends to get together…
…vacations…

What does summer mean to you?
Do you celebrate its advent?
Can you wear a smile more often?
What will happen if you do?
What will happen if you don’t?

Could you make it mean something more?
How might you pull more from it?
What might you give and contribute?

As sure as winter will turn to spring, so, too, will summer turn to
fall.
How will you feel then?

I wish you snow-cones and Popsicles, sand castles and a boat ride,
barbeques with loved ones, a relaxing vacation, a perfect outdoor
picnic…
…and a happy fall…

That’s A View From The Ridge…

When summer turns into fall I’ll look forward to moving to California next year :-)

I’ve decided to say goodbye to the European climate, especially in Germany.

But fortunately I’ve already had my fair share of snow-cones, barbeques and also several relaxing vacations (short ones though).

What I love most about summer and warm temperatures in general is the happiness around me. It seems like in summer more people thrive and feel good. That’s very inspiring.
